The same goes for pantries, laundry rooms, and entryways: shelving, rods, hooks, and cubbies set at heights that match what you store. Off-the-shelf kits assume a square closet with drywall behind it; a lot of Portland closets are neither, and making the kit fit the room is the real skill.

Common Problems We Solve

The plastic pop-anchors that ship with wire shelving hold a shelf, not a wardrobe. We patch the torn drywall, relocate the clips so the load path runs into studs, and rehang the same shelving so it can carry what you actually put on it.

The builder-standard layout wastes most of the closet's height. We split the space into double-hang for shirts and pants, keep one long-hang section for coats and dresses, and put shelving or drawers in what's left.
The kit will not fit — the closet is out of square.
Common in older houses, where no two walls agree. We measure all three walls at rod height, trim rails and shelves to the tightest dimension, and shim so everything reads level.

Sixteen-inch-deep fixed shelves bury everything behind the front row. We rework the bay with shallower adjustable shelving on standards, so cans sit two deep at most and the spacing can change when your shopping does.
How It Works
Measure and lay it out
We measure the space, ask what hangs and what folds, and sketch the rod and shelf plan with you before anything is ordered or cut.
Clear the old system
Existing shelving comes out, old anchor holes get filled and sanded, and we mark where the studs really are.
Cut, fit, and anchor
Rails and shelves are cut to the opening, hardware goes into framing or anchors rated for the wall, and every run is checked level and tugged hard.
Load and adjust
We set shelf heights with your things in hand, tune drawer and door alignment on modular units, and walk the layout with you so nothing needs rearranging next week.
What's Not Included
- Custom walk-in millwork — floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobes with face frames and finished carpentry are a cabinet maker's project. We install manufactured systems and simple shelving.
- Hardwired closet lighting — battery and plug-in fixtures we can mount, but adding wiring or switches is line-voltage work for a licensed electrician.
- Moving or widening the closet itself — reframing walls or enlarging a door opening is a remodeling contractor's scope.
- Decluttering and sorting services — we build the storage; a professional organizer is the right call for deciding what goes in it.
What Affects the Price
- Closet size and component count
- A single reach-in with two rods is a short visit; a walk-in with towers, drawers, and shoe shelving is most of a day of cutting and fitting.
- Tear-out and patching
- Removing an old system and repairing its anchor holes adds real time before the install starts.
- Wall construction
- Studs behind drywall are quick to hit; lath and plaster in older homes hides the framing and punishes careless drilling, so anchoring takes longer.
- Drawers and accessories
- Rods and shelves go up fast — drawer units, pull-out baskets, and door racks each add assembly and alignment time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you make a closet kit fit an old, out-of-square closet?
Yes — that is most of what we do in pre-war Portland houses. We measure each wall separately, cut rails and shelves to the real dimensions, and shim the system plumb. The kit ends up looking factory-fit even when the closet is anything but.
Wire or melamine shelving — which should I pick?
Wire is cheaper, ventilates well, and suits laundry rooms and kids' closets; small items tip through it and it looks utilitarian. Melamine gives flat shelves, drawers, and a furniture look, but weighs more and demands better anchoring. Often the right answer is wire in the pantry and melamine in the bedroom.
My old closet shelf pulled out of the wall. Can you reuse it?
Usually — the shelving itself rarely breaks; the anchors fail. We repair the wall and rehang the original shelf with clips and brackets landing on studs or plaster-rated anchors, replacing only pieces that came down bent.
How much weight can a closet rod or shelf actually hold?
Almost entirely a question of what the hardware is fastened to. A rod bracketed into two studs carries a full run of winter coats; the same rod in hollow-wall anchors creeps loose in months. Every load-bearing bracket goes into framing, with a mid-span support on long rods.
Do I need to empty the closet before you arrive?
Please, yes — bare walls if you can. It keeps drywall dust off your clothes and lets us see the full opening. If emptying it is physically difficult, tell us when booking and we will plan for it.
